The Benefits of Kava

The Kava (Piper Methysticum) plant has been used for centuries as an integral part of cultural ceremonies and social gatherings through out the Pacific.

It has only been in the last two centuries that the western world has come to know of Kava and conduct pharmacological studies on the plant, providing us with an excellent basis for the understanding of Kava’s use in natural medicine.

Stress, Anxiety, Tension, PMS, Panic Attacks, Anti-Depressant

Non-alcoholic Kava is widely used for the relief of anxiety and stress, but not the unpleasant side effects of a hangover. It is said to induce an ‘euphoric, clear minded state in which the drinker cannot be annoyed.’1  Studies have shown that Kava is ‘as effective as benzodiazepine and without the negative side effects of slowed reaction time and impaired mental acuity. In fact, tests show patients became more vigilant and had improved memory and reaction time’2 after consuming Kava.

Sedative, Insomnia

‘Kava is a first-rate sedative, producing a state of calm, and promoting sleep if taken in sufficient quantity’3.

Analgesic, Anticonvulsant, Headache

‘Kava is superior to aspirin in its analgesic effects and less potent than morphine.’3

Muscle Relaxant

Kava is an excellent muscle relaxant and can make the pain of an aching back, a sore neck, or any other cramped, sore, or injured muscle disappear.’3

Appetite Suppressant

‘In the Pacific islands kava is usually drunk before eating, and it is widely known that kava tends to reduce appetite.’1

Anti-Fungal, Diuretic

‘Kava has also been used for some time in the treatment of urinary tract problems. The herb has been found to allay irritable bladder conditions. The relaxant and anaesthetic properties would be useful enough but there may yet also be an antibacterial action.’2

Serving Suggestion

1-2 teaspoons per cup of boiling water as a relaxing tea. Serve hot or cold.
